Professional Development - September

During the professional development day on September 17^th, the main focus of the training time included vocabulary instruction in each subject area, reading instruction at the middle and elementary schools, curriculum, and the following initiatives at the high school: personal learning plans, the advisor/advisee program, and 9^th grade transition issues.

In the morning session, Jen Madison from the Educational Service Unit #6 met with the teachers in the elementary to discuss a research-based methodology for selecting and teaching specific vocabulary.  Teachers learned about the research behind the project and spent time working on the identification of critical vocabulary lists for each grade level.  Also during the morning session, Lynette Block from the Nebraska Department of Education met with the middle school reading literacy team to align their reading instruction in grades 5-8.  They also discussed specific interventions to utilize for struggling students and began the discussion on how to formulate a comprehensive plan to reach all students.  At the high school, teachers continued their work on the above initiatives and worked in curriculum teams to further align and adapt the curriculum in each subject area.  Mr. Best also met with several curricular groups to discuss the curriculum review that is taking place during this school year.

The afternoon session saw the high school and middle school teachers working on vocabulary instruction with Jen Madison and the elementary teachers met with Lynette Block to further refine their reading instruction through the Reading Mastery program and the core reading program.

A lot of information was shared, discussed and adapted … all of it focused on the needs of our students.

With the new addition of security systems in each building, the front offices in each building and other key personnel received training on the use of the system on September 27^th.
